Recently came across this idea when searching for ideas to heat a year-round greenhouse.
The concept is quite straight forward really. Compost generates alot of heat. Why not capture this heat instead of letting it disperse unused into the air?
There's alot of info available on the web, just search for 'Compost Heating Systems', or something along those lines. You can find great info and detailed plans at compostpower.org.
Here is a link to a project building a 'Pain Mound' - invented by Jean Pain (although they could have came up with a better name). JP Composting can heat water to temperatures >60 °C at a rate of 4L per minute! I would someday like to try this out on Two Goats Farm.
You could even do it small-scale and in an urban setting like these guys who have designed a Compost Wheelie Bin for producing hot water.
